Following Your Heart | Connecticut Family Photographer

It’s a shift, another step in the building blocks of life. And I’m not talking biology or science here because those subjects were never my strengths :).  I’m talking about how you get to a place of following your heart and reclaiming your own life. Sounds dreamy right? May sound like a far off wish or hope or prayer.  Creating a life for YOU.  For your husband or wife. For your children. For your family.

Today I read an inspirational reading from Journey To The Heart and was inspired to share a few lines with you tonight.

December 9, Claim Your Own Life
“Claiming your own life creates fulfillment and joy.  We can trust ourselves.  We know what we need, we know what we yearn for.  We can take responsibility for our lives.  We can take responsibility for what we create.  We don’t have to be afraid of making a mistake or doing something wrong.  If we create a situation we don’t like, we can create something different.  We’re free to create the life we want.”

I remember when I turned 30, things began to shift for me.  I kept asking myself what our life would look like for Justin and I in 5, 10, 15 years if we kept going at this rate and pace.  How would life look and more importantly, how would it feel.  I was often asked that question at work in goal setting meetings or interviews “where do you see yourself in ‘x’ amount of years.”

Great question!

I am proud to have built a career while working with others driven by a common goal, learning the values of hard work, teamwork, of leading teams, being among a large work family of go-getters and creative thinkers.

The place I come from is not a place for the non-motivated, for the non-multi-tasker.  It’s a place for the committed and the courageous.  It’s a place for the fearless.  And my goodness there are so many days I still sit back and think how special it was to be part of something so powerful and large.  I am proud that I pushed myself to grow the way I did during my 13 years with ESPN.  How I was constantly challenged to go outside my comfort zone and develop the tenacity and professionalism to become a business owner.

It was all for a reason.

But ultimately, I was chasing others’ expectations and fulfilling goals that didn’t sustain me the way they once had.  Something big shifted.

I craved a different life.  I craved to create a different voice.  I craved flexibility.  I craved a deeper purpose.

I know you may be thinking, “don’t we all.”  Absolutely!  Why not have those desires?  Those desires are simply your inner voice softly telling you that there is more.  That living a life of purpose is stirring in the back of your mind because if it wasn’t whispering those desires, then you wouldn’t be considering a life outside of what your today looks like or more importantly what your life feels like.  Trust you gut and listen to that voice.

Throughout my own “shift”, there were seminars, online courses, workshops, training, yoga, writing life goals, writing long-term business goals, smart business investments, believing, looking and acknowledging signs, inspiration, and a solid drive and commitment for CHANGE.

That drive is there within, even when you feel you simply cannot give anymore.  It starts small, you slowly begin to build an idea and then the determination to shift your thinking creeps in and with each passing day that same determination follows until the fire ignites and your only choice is to look forward with a clear direction.

You find ways to balance home-life, hectic travel schedules, flooded inboxes, endless to-dos in the middle of building your future life.  It will be difficult and overwhelming, I’m sorry, I wish I could tell you otherwise.  But the good news is that we will be here to pick you up.  You may doubt yourself or your newly discovered purpose, over and over and over again.  But we will be here to tell you that YOU are gifted, that you are talented in ways you may not see for yourself.  You may give up hope for a little bit, and that’s ok too.  We will be here to check in and ask how things are going and that fire will ignite once again.

What you will keep coming back to is how incredible it is to push yourself in new ways you didn’t think possible.  And the intense joy felt while doing it, the endless amount of heart-exploding moments, well that right there, is what will keep you moving in the right direction.

As you build your new life, you will hold yourself accountable, and you will need to give yourself permission to make mistakes, to be ok with not being able to give 100% to everything or to everyone.  Along the way, you will cross those huge hurdles, you will find what drives and inspires you…and my dear friend, you WILL make it happen!  You will get it all done and come out on the other side when the timing feels right.

Slowly, with time, with support, with encouragement, and always with love.  Trust that there is a plan and believe in it with all your might.

I feel encouraged to share parts of my journey to help others strive and believe.  That is so very important to me.  I would love to hear your story or answer any questions.  Feel free to drop me a note, my inbox is always open to those who believe and are inspired to change their own life story.
