Not too many things make me happier than reconnecting with my past families to capture a new year full of new meaning.
I remember the very first time I met Carrie Ann, feels like yesterday, she was expecting her second baby at the time and I was excited to photograph that particular season of life for them as they welcomed their baby boy and celebrated becoming a family of four.
Prior to their session this summer, I stopped over their house to finalize details and assist with wardrobe selection. Hanging throughout their home are framed black and white photographs from our past sessions, so beautifully displayed and wonderful reminders of how precious these years that move so quickly truly are to preserve. There is one picture in particular that hangs in the master bedroom that their 2 -year old pointed to saying “baby”, something he says all the time when looking at that particular photograph.
For me, this association lights my heart on fire, the connection to a time that has passed, the sense of place and meaning behind each photograph that children can relate to as they grow. There’s a comfort in seeing old photographs and retelling the family stories behind them all. As I drove away that day, I got the sweetest farewell from the “baby”, who stood at the front door waving goodbye and watching as I pulled out of their driveway. Man, how I fall more and more in love with my job and the bonds I am so fortunate to create with my families!
This was my third time photographing their family, as they anticipate the joy of three this winter. It was a gorgeous summer evening as they enjoyed time together as they look forward to the beautiful moments on the horizon as a family of five. And believe me, I am counting down the days till I get to photograph them this winter holding their newest family member; their new “baby” to add to the collection of family heirlooms displayed on the walls throughout their home.
