She and her loving husband had just celebrated their ten year wedding anniversary. Ten years and three beautiful children later, their youngest baby girl was weeks away from turning two and time was passing so quickly.
We photographed their session on a beautiful August summer night and preserved a time that our grandfather would have been so proud to see us carrying on tradition, as he was the one who passionately documented our family memories throughout the years. I remember my grandfather would carry around his large videotape recorder, plugging it into the wall with the longest yellow extension wire. He would walk around my parents first floor as he recorded us kids opening gifts on Christmas day. Everyone would run away from the camera, or say “get that big bright light out of my face”, no flash back then.
But he got it, he knew he was preserving a time for his family to be able to look back on and remember as we grew, as the seasons of life changed, and as we evolved. He understood the value and meaning of preserving his family’s legacy.
It wasn’t until a few years ago that I even discovered my grandfather had a passion for photography. As my father, aunts and uncles cleaned out my grandparents old home, my dad would bring me a few small pieces of grandfathers collection of camera equipment and photography books. Tucked away inside his books were hand-written notes on shutter speed, aperture, composition. I love knowing that his passion for photography and documenting stories has been passed down to me. What I would give to find any old photographs he took or a chance to talk to him about how he learned this craft. I keep his books in my home office and pull them out from time-to-time just to remember his hand-writing, it always makes me smile knowing his passion lives on. I think he would be proud knowing his granddaughter is building a career and creating a life rooted so deeply in the preservation of family history.
It was an honor to preserve this special time for my loving cousin and her incredible family to remember for tomorrow. I believe the future generations are just as important as the generations that came before and am blessed to capture life for families to remember always. For today and in the generations to come.
