Part of why I adore black and white photographs is held in this one single picture. A special picture of my father and me after a rare eye surgery when I was 18 months old. I found this timeless memory as a kid in my “folder”-yes my dad kept a manila folder for each of us three kids with report cards, records, newspaper clippings etc.
The hospital photographer who snapped this kindly mailed it to my parents for safekeeping. I studied every little detail in this picture-how content I looked in my dad’s arms, my bandage, my father’s expression.
I’ve always loved capturing candid, natural moments, where the connection and emotion is not only seen but felt. This picture I am holding is a piece of what inspires me to create timeless portraits for families. It’s a piece of my past that has led me to fiercely build my business and switch careers at the age of thirty-five.
The deep desire for families, especially children to see a reflection of the comfort provided, the love given, and the joy felt to carry them through life; a piece of their story preserved. And my goodness if one day a single portrait I capture can leave a lasting impression on them, the way this photo has for me, then how beautiful is that.
